Issue: An unmarried college student, living at home, and covered on her parent’s health policy as a dependent is pregnant. The newborn will be her dependent, not her parent’s so she will need insurance on the child only. Are stand alone policies available for children?

I am in my first trimester and just wondering when do I need to get health insurance for my newborn-the health insurance is United Healthcare and offered through my job

I’m not due until May 19 but I read in a book that if you choose to add your unborn child to your health insurance, you can. But no one can tell me for sure if I need too. Open enrollment for my insurance isn’t until September of next year, after my baby is born. What do I need to do?
